Patients with Disabilities and Their Families

You have the right to designate at least three support persons. At least one support person can always be with you in the emergency department and during your hospital stay to facilitate your care if, due to your disability, you need assistance:

  • Communicating with hospital staff,
  • Making medical decisions, and/or
  • Providing care needs related to activities of daily living.

This hospital will ensure your support person is present for any discussions where you may be asked to make an end-of-life decision, unless requested otherwise by you.

Your designated support person will be required to adhere to Legacy policy to ensure safety of our patients, staff and visitors.

If you have a concern about your care or if you need a support person based on your disability, please bring it to the attention of your care team.  We appreciate the opportunity to help resolve your concern about access to a support person and/or patient care.
